The Struggle is Real: Finding Work-Home Balance As lash artists, we pour our hearts into perfecting our craft, satisfying our clients, and building a flourishing business. However, it's equally important to take a step back and assess whether we're striking the right balance with our personal lives, especially if we have a family waiting for us at home.
The demands of the lash industry can be intense, and it's easy to find ourselves dedicating long hours to our studios or salons. This can inadvertently lead to a strain on our relationships, both with our significant others and our children. Finding equilibrium is essential not just for our well-being but also for the longevity and success of our careers.
I have 3 children, I travel between two countries, home in Sweden with my family and Lash Heaven in England. I know exactly what this feel like and the more I travel, the more I realise that I need to be stricter where I put my time, energy and also learn to be present more, especially when I am with my family.
Here
are some Tips for Achieving Work-Home Harmony:
Set
Boundaries: Establish clear boundaries between work and home life. Define specific working hours and stick to them as much as possible. This helps create a structured routine for both your professional and personal life. What are your strictly no "phone" time, no clients messages, what are your working hours? You will soon realise, when you respect "your hours" so will your customers.
Prioritize
Self-Care: Remember that taking care of yourself is not a luxury but a necessity. Schedule regular breaks, engage in activities you enjoy, and make time for self-care. A rejuvenated and balanced you will enhance the quality of your work and relationships. Breaks are important, I always set aside at least 30 mins breakfast where I enjoy "my peace" and a coffee and I also have 30 mins lunch. I do set aside time where I go gym, yoga, dance classes, meditation and walks with my
dog. I also get my nails and lashes, to enhance my feminine features. These appointments are high on my priority list.
Delegate
and Outsource: Don't be afraid to delegate tasks that can be handled by others. Whether it's hiring an assistant for administrative work or outsourcing certain responsibilities, sharing the load can free up valuable time for your family. At work, use booking systems, card reader, automated response on emails, FAQ on your website to save you from spending time that does not generate money. If you are in a position of employing a lash artist/empoloyee/VA to take over some of your work, great! Delegate more and free up your time. At home, I have a cleaner once a week, this means the time I would have to clean, I can spend time with my children.
Family
time: I call my family day, Sunday Funday. If you have children, your "family time" should be a non-negotiable, for me its not to work on Sundays. This is when I want to give my family all my attention, where I am being present, creating memories and also making them feel important. Focus on the quality of your time spent with your family rather than the quantity. Be present during those moments, whether it's a family dinner, a school play, or a quiet evening at home. Quality time fosters stronger connections.
Communicate
Openly: Explain to your clients that you have children, they will understand if you perhaps have not done your make-up or one of your children calls you on the phone. Also maintain open communication with your family about your work commitments and involve them in your schedule planning. This transparency helps set expectations and allows your loved ones to understand the demands of your profession. Perhaps you have to work evenings, weekends, then explain to your family that most of your clients have work or school and they can't come except these times
and you will spend time on this and that day where you don't work at all.
Embrace
Flexibility: Life is unpredictable, and work-home balance is a dynamic concept. Embrace flexibility and be willing to adapt your schedule when unexpected events arise. Flexibility can be a powerful tool in maintaining harmony. Having clear communication with your clients is important, so they understand that you are only a human. So, don't have 6 full days back to back with clients, ensure you add some breaks, toilet breaks, to drink, eat and to breath.. Remember, achieving a balance between your lash artistry and home life is an ongoing process. By implementing these tips and customising them to fit your unique circumstances, you'll be better equipped to lead a fulfilling and rewarding life both professionally and personally. Don't forget yourself besides work and family, keep yourself strong mentally, physically, emotionally and spiritually.
